Hey, great day Inspirers!

As we enter into this next month (June) instead of pontificating what I have learned, I want to introduce you to a few amazing people who have poured into me. They have shifted the way I think and made me more resilient. They have shown me what I need to amputate and what I need to amplify to become better tomorrow than I am today.

Trust and Teamwork: Leadership Insights from Air Force Thunderbird Pilot Nicole Malachowski

The first person you have the pleasure meeting is becoming a dear friend. Colonel Nicole Malachowski (USAF, Ret.) is a trailblazer and inspirational leader. She was the first female pilot to join the USAF Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron, and her military career is marked by excellence and courage. Beyond her aviation prowess, Nicole is known for her insights on leadership, resilience, and the power of teamwork. Her experiences and lessons resonate across various fields, making her a sought-after speaker and mentor.

She developed Lyme disease which ended her flying career and changed the way she has to navigate life. When I asked her to write me a few words to encourage you, I had no idea she was doing it while getting an IV. Tough!

Top Three Leadership Insights

My question was what are your three top inspirational leadership lessons? Here is what Nicole said:
  1. Embrace Cross-Functional Relationships: “Nothing of significance has ever been accomplished alone. To me, this alludes to the power of cross-functional relationships. I think it also lends itself to humility in knowing that you are part of something bigger than yourself. It is a reminder to be a master of your craft. It means putting your ego aside and letting other people take as much pride in doing their job as you do.”
  2. Trust Begins with You: “You build trust by being trustworthy. To me, this alludes to the fact that trust starts with our actions, decisions, and behaviors. So often on teams, we look to other people to bring us that feeling of trust, when in reality, it should be the exact opposite. Ask yourself if what I’m about to say or do adds to the trust, calm, and confidence. And, if it is…move out!”
  3. Being Part of Something Bigger than Yourself: I say again, being part of something bigger than yourself requires putting your ego aside and letting others people to pride in their work. This humility fosters a collaborative environment where everyone can excel.

Two people to follow

Nicole has made my "People to Follow" list a couple of times! She is just that good. If you are not already following Col. Nicole Malachowski I encourage you to follow her for her profound insights on leadership, resilience, and teamwork. Her experiences as a pioneering aviator and leader offer valuable lessons applicable to various aspects of life and work.

Lori Gottlieb is a psychotherapist and author of the bestseller, “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone.” She writes the “Dear Therapist” advice column for The Atlantic and contributes to various media outlets. Her work, blending personal anecdotes, makes psychological concepts accessible. She is a public speaker and podcast host on mental health topics. Follow @lorigottlieb_author

Amputate to Amplify Action Step:

Build Trust by Being Intentional

Reckoning: Start the week by reflecting on your current leadership actions and decisions. Recognize any patterns or behaviors that may inadvertently erode trust within your team. Identify moments where your actions might not align with the values of trust, calm, and confidence.

Revision: Commit to amputating behaviors that detract from team trust. This could include hesitations in communication, lack of transparency, or inconsistency in decision-making. Make a deliberate effort to enhance your trust-building actions. Before you speak or decide on a matter, pause to consider if your action will reinforce trust, calm, and confidence within your team.

Renewal: Lead by example and consistently demonstrate trustworthy behavior. Actively show your team that you value transparency, reliability, and empathy in every interaction. This ongoing commitment will foster a stronger, more confident team, aligned around shared values and trust.
